Word Image Image Word - Cincinnati Event
January 01, 2015 to January 23, 2015 - Cincinnati

The Art Academy of Cincinnati is pleased to present "Word Image Image
Word," an exhibition that runs in the Convergys Gallery from January 5 -
23, 2015 with a closing reception from 5:00-8:00 pm on Friday, January
23. Chair of the Liberal Arts Department, Matt Hart is the exhibition
curator.
Exhibition Statement:
"Writing's just drawing in different apparel, and drawing is another way of writing."—Jean Cocteau
This exhibition explores the relationship between language and visual
art through the words and images of 12 nationally and internationally
known writers at various points in their careers. Among them are poets,
fiction writers, essayists, editors, and translators. They range in age
from 20s to 60s, and they live in nine different states—from Florida to
California, from New York to Texas. A few are also visual artists. One
is a Pulitzer Prize Finalist. One is a well-known post hardcore
vocalist.
In November of 2014, each participating writer was given two 5.5" x 8.5" sheets of white writing paper. Each was asked to use only marks, lines, and visuals on one sheet and only language (words, sentences, etc.) on the other. The premise that would guide the work they produced is the Jean Cocteau quote above.
"Word Image Image Word" includes works by Darcie Dennigan, Jordan Dreyer, Adam Fell, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, Noelle Kocot, Carrie Lorig, Jason Morris, Kiki Petrosino, Nate Pritts, Nick Sturm, Dean Young, and Laurie Saurborn Young.
