Guardian and Angel Oak, A solo exhibition by Kent Krugh August 3 - August 21 Opening Celebration: August 3rd, 6 - 8 p.m. CCAC is proud to present a solo exhibition by Kent Krugh - 2012 Golden Ticket Best-in-Show winner and featured as one of Cincinnati Enquirer's "10 Who Are Advancing The Arts" in 2013 - featuring two bodies of work, including the premier of "Guardian." Angel Oak A series of photographs exploring the largest tree this side of the Mississippi. "One hundred years before Christopher Columbus landed the Santa Maria on the Bahamas Archipelago, an acorn germinated and became the Angel Oak. [...] One can try to follow the fractal patterns of the branches down to the twig and leaf, but it cannot be done. There are too many. Too much mass for my mind to grasp. The symmetry, the flowing rivers of wood, the gravity of the trunk draws me to touch the tree. To make a connection. But it is difficult. I can only admire and wonder at the glory and power reflected in its majesty by its Creator." Guardian Krugh's newest body of work offers a visual meditation of the nature of reality. Guardian uses Krugh's signature photographic techniques in superimpositions of statues layered over woodland and natural spaces. "For millennia, artists have depicted angels in poses of authority and action. Statues of angels have been situated high on city gates and on top of buildings symbolizing protection and vigilance from on high. In this work, figures are inserted into the natural landscape to symbolize guardianship within our landscape, our quiet spaces. [...] The woods and natural spaces in these photomontages are of the Fernald Preserve in northwest Hamilton County, former location of the Fernald uranium enrichment plant that contaminated soil and water." About the Artist: "I grew up on my grandfather's farm in northern Ohio where I helped in the fields and with the livestock. My other grandfather took me into the woods to hunt and onto the lake to fish. Solitary hours in the fields, woods, and on the lake provided ample opportunity to ponder the beauty and power of nature. The ordered beauty of crop rows and the concentric ripples on water's surface made an impression on me. Coupled with a religious upbringing, my faith embraces the notion of a universe created and sustained by a supreme being. A degree in physics fuels my inquisitive nature and reinforces my astonishment at the intricacies of life and the physical processes that drive our universe."
