The Friends of Harriet Beecher Stowe House will host the first annual Semi-Colon Club Lecture Series event on Sunday June 23 from 4 to 7 PM. John E. Douglass, Ph.D, Associate Professor of History at UC Blue Ash, will present a free public lecture entitled "What was at stake: Expansion, Slavery and the Case of Wharton Jones v. John Van Zandt". Professor Douglass's lecture will connect the events of April 24, 1842 when John Van Zandt attempted in the vicinity of the Lane Theological Seminary to assist nine fugitive slaves in their quest for freedom. These nine fugitives were the property of Wharton Jones of Kentucky. He brought suit in federal court to secure damages for the costs he had sustained in the return of his property. Following a Q & A period and reception and light refreshments will be served. Voluntary donations are welcome.. The Stowe House is open from 10 AM - 1 PM on Wed, Thurs and Sat.
