When Truman was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) at 22 months, a neurological disorder which makes it difficult to correctly pronounce syllables and words; hence, a lack of expressive language, we were confused, desperate, overwhelmed and a little scared for his future. Even though the exact "cause" is unknown, we have learned to not only accept but advocate for children and families afflicted. We reversed our energy to awe, determination, hope, love and support. Our son, Truman, is extremely independent, inquisitive, and intelligent; he has sass, is silly, and sweet all wrapped into one! He knows what he wants to say but has difficulty planning and producing the precise, specific movements of his lips, jaw, palate, and tongue that are necessary for audible speech. He is completely capable of comprehension, his receptive language is stellar and amazes us with each passing day. He primarily uses sign language to communicate his needs and wants; we encourage interactions with him to be highly engaging and stimulating using repetitive vocabulary. Since the beginning of 2012, Truman has had weekly language, speech and sign language therapy sessions with our "hero" team at Children's Hospital and Help Me Grow. CAS is a long, tedious process and oftentimes is frustrating for Truman but he's making progress and we are proud of his accomplishments thus far. Unlike many other disorders that impact children, there is not a clear public understanding or "roadmap" for success so we seek to change this and invite you on our CAS Crusade - to spread the WORD (pun intended) and raise awareness for Truman and kids like him that have a spice for life and deserve a VOICE:-) You are invited to join us as we proudly walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech on Saturday, September 14th from 9 AM until NOON at Union Township Veteran's Memorial Park in Cincinnati, Ohio. All proceeds will provide research and programs for CAS families like ours through the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA). The cost per adult is $20 and $10 for children (18 and younger). Thanks in advance for your care, concern, love and support; we appreciate your help to unlock our voices and open up our futures! Please Note: We would like to recognize each registered child with Apraxia at the Walk so please forward your child's age, name, and photo to: trumanstrekntrot@gmail.com. Register by Sunday, August 18, 2013 to receive an official Apraxia Walk t-shirt in your size! IMPORTANT - Did you register a child with apraxia of speech? If so, please e-mail the following: child's first and last name, child's age, and your Walk name to Justin LeWinter at justinl@apraxia-kids.org by September 4, 2013.
