Family Program: Roofing with Build It! Architecture for Kids. This special family program from 2:00 to 4:00 pm will focus on roofing.
Build It! Architecture for Kids will be on view at The Betts House April 13 - July 27, 2013. The exhibit, on loan from archKIDecture in Chicago, provides hands-on opportunities for children to explore architecture and construction.
The exhibit consists of nine modules presenting architectural subjects including roofs, tools, and shapes. Designed for children age three to twelve, the exhibit uses activities on shapes, color, and symmetries to promote visual literacy while exploring math concepts. The exhibit also encourages children to discover the many properties of building materials and structures.
Build It! encourages children to interact with each module, either on their own or by collaborating with other children or adults. Children will be able to design a tree house, decorate a skyscraper, make tessellations, create a floor plan, and more. Through the manipulation of materials, children will be empowered to build, draw and create. In addition to the hands-on activities, interpretative panels explain the work of an architect and basic architectural concepts.
An educator open house will take place on April 11, 2013, 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Educators will be invited to preview the exhibit and will be provided with materials for classroom use. Schools, home school groups, and scouts will be able to visit The Betts House and Build It! with free admission.
